Why the decision of limiting access to the Haramain is a good one?

The COVID-19 spreads from human to human transmission and has proved to be very contagious according to the WHO. A person with the infection can spread the virus up-to 3 person and the number could increase exponentially if social distancing is not observed.

Saudi Arabia’s decision of limiting access to the Haramain and closure of Umrah was criticized by many accusing authorities of not having ‘faith’. But this criticism simply lacks Islamic backing.

Abdullah ibn Umar reported: I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, circling the Ka’bah and saying, “How pure you are and how pure is your fragrance! How great you are and how great is your sanctity! By the one in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, the sanctity of the believer is greater to Allah than your sanctity, in his wealth, his life, and to assume nothing of him but good.” Source: Sunan Ibn Mājah 3932

When the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) has declared that the life of a believer is worth greater than the Ka’bah, it becomes our duty to go lengths to protect the life of a believer even if the Tawaaf of the Kabah has to be stopped or be limited.

In the cities of Makkah and Madinah, millions of believers gather from all corners of the world, if God Forbid any person were to travel with the virus it could spread to many people and become the epicenter of the spread.

The General Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques under the leadership of Sheikh Abdul Rehman Al Sudais has taken many precautionary steps in order to prevent spread of the virus through the Two Holy Mosques, including limiting Tawaaf  to 50 people at a time and closing the Mosques out of prayer times.

We Pray to Allah to get rid of this pandemic soon and open the gates of the Haramain to all Muslims

Maa Sha Allah, I know the decisions were taken under painful and careful considerations. Leadership is not easy, people will definitely criticize but it is for the leaders to take the most informed decision under Islamic Jurisprudence. May Allah continue to bless the Haramain Sharifain.
