Summary of the Jummah Khutbah from Masjid Al Nabawi, Madinah (23 Muharram 1442)

The Seerah of the Prophet Muhammad

1. A person will be with the one whom he loves. Loving the Prophet (may Allah's praise and peace be upon him) is a condition for one's faith. The greatest means to loving the Prophet (may Allah's praise and peace be upon him) is to learn about his life, his virtues, and his character.

2. He was chosen from the greatest of mankind. He has a family tree full of honor and glory. His ancestors were full of good and virtue. The best of them is Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Abdul Muttalib, the Qurashi, Hashimi Arab. His mother is Aminah bint Wahb Al-Qurashiyyah. Allah chose for him the best place. He was born and raised in Makkah, Umm Al-Qura, and there, he received revelation.

3. When he turned forty, Allah made him a Prophet. He sent him a revelation, making him the last of Prophets and Messengers. He started his message by calling people to worship Allah alone and abandoning polytheism, encouraging traits of virtue, commanding good, and forbidding evil, oppression, and corruption. He did this in Makkah for a period of thirteen years, calling his people day and night, in secret and in public.

4. Allah allowed His Prophet to migrate to the purest of lands, Madinah. Residing in it is beautiful. It is the city of faith, and to it, the faithful rush. In it were the soldiers of Allah, the Ansar.

5. During the ten years of Madinah, Allah completed His religion. People accepted the religion of Allah in large waves. Islam spread throughout the Arabian peninsula as its people submitted [to Allah], accepting Islam.

6. In the month of Rabi Al-Awwal, in the eleventh year after Hijrah, after the farewell pilgrimage, the Prophet (may Allah's praise and peace be upon him) was overtaken by the pains of sickness — may my parents be ransomed for his sake! Allah gave him the choice, and he chose to meet his Lord, saying, "0 Allah! The higher assembly. 0 Allah! The higher assembly. 0 Allah! The higher assembly." The time of departure approached. So, he advised (his Companions) and bid them farewell. The world darkened upon his departure, and the Muslims were torn apart.

Excerpts from the Jummah Khutbah

1. Learn about your Prophet so that you may know his honor and status, which will cause you to love and obey him. None of you will truly believe until the Prophet (may Allah's praise and peace be upon him) is more beloved to you than yourself, your children, your parents, and all of mankind.

2. Allah chooses messengers from amongst angels and mankind. He chose Muhammad (praise and peace be upon him) from the greatest souls. He honored him and give him precedence over all of mankind. Allah (the Most Exalted) said, "There has certainly come to you a Messenger from among yourselves. Grievous to him is what you suffer; [he is] concerned over you and is kind and merciful to the believers." [9:128]

3. Allah has indeed created all of His servants in a state of monotheism. Then, the devils made them stray from their religion. They forbade them from what Allah allowed, and commanded them to associate partners with Allah with which He had not sent down any authority. Allah looked at the people of the earth and despised them (for their shirk) except for some remnants of the People of the Book (who worshipped Him alone).

4. Allah's Messenger (may Allah's praise and peace be upon him) experienced the difficulty of being an orphan. His father died when his mother was still pregnant with him. His mother died when he was six. His grandfather, Abdul Muttalib, took care of him for two years, then he died. His paternal uncle, Abu Talib, took care of him, protected him, and defended him, but he died ten years after the Prophet received revelation.
